With the fall campaign moving full-steam ahead, San Diego Mayoral candidate Carl DeMaio picked up an important, citywide endorsement today from San Diego City Attorney Jan Goldsmith who touted DeMaio’s collaborative and balanced approach to governing.
“Having worked with Carl during the past four years, I see him as an energetic leader who has been willing to fight for thoughtful and innovative change, but he is also willing to roll up his sleeves and work with others to ensure the city is properly managed on a day to day basis,” said Goldsmith, a former San Diego judge and State Assemblyman. “Carl DeMaio has a record of collaboration and a temperament that makes him the best and only choice for Mayor.”
“Today, I am honored to receive Jan’s endorsement. As one of the most respected legal minds in our city, Jan represents the best in civic government and has a record of public service matched by few,” said DeMaio. “I believe San Diegans are in agreement with Jan: they want a leader who has a balanced approach to governing. I will work with all San Diegans regardless of political affiliations to improve our quality of life.”
Goldsmith noted, “San Diego has made great progress since the days when our city was known as ‘Enron by the sea.’ The economic recovery continues to be slow and uncertain. Our city must be diligent to ensure that we can deliver and enhance services to our communities. Carl DeMaio has the right leadership skills and energy to bring San Diego to the next level of success in these uncertain times.”
In recent years, DeMaio led the fight against a citywide sales tax hike and won a landmark victory this past June for pension reform.
“Carl’s ability to tackle problems rather than avoid them will help protect against structural budget deficits that impair the city's ability to maintain consistency in service levels,” Goldsmith added.
Goldsmith was appointed San Diego Superior Court Judge in 1998 and retired in December of 2008 to assume the office of San Diego City Attorney. Prior to his appointment, Goldsmith served three terms in the California State Assembly representing the Northern San Diego City District. He also served as Mayor of Poway. Goldsmith graduated magna cum laude from University of San Diego in 1976.
